The currency problem nobody talks about

33,000 Brits bought property abroad last year. Most paid their bank to handle the money. That is a mistake you could have helped them avoid.

When a client buys in France or Spain, relocates abroad, or releases UK equity to fund an overseas purchase, the money has to move internationally. Most reach for their high-street bank out of habit. Banks charge margin on the exchange rate, add transfer fees, and offer no specialist guidance on timing or market volatility. Lumon does the opposite — and estate agents who make the introduction earn every time that client ever transfers, for the life of the relationship.

"Our clients buying in France didn't realise the exchange rate would eat into their budget."

Banks routinely add 2-4% margin on top of the interbank rate. On a £300,000 transfer, that is up to £12,000 lost in margin before a single stone is laid. Lumon's bank-beating rates eliminate that gap — giving clients more budget or more savings on the same transaction.

"We had a vendor who was relocating to Spain. We just gave them the bank details and wished them luck."

Vendors moving abroad after a UK sale need to move the proceeds internationally. That conversation — and the referral commission it generates — belongs with you, not a bank. Lumon makes the referral process take 90 seconds and pays you for it.

"Currency volatility made a buyer's budget collapse three weeks before exchange."

Sterling moved more than 12% against the dollar in 2025 alone. Without a forward contract locking in the rate at offer, a buyer's overseas budget can evaporate between agreeing a price and completing. Lumon's forward contracts remove that risk.

"We don't feel qualified to advise on currency. So we say nothing."

You don't need to advise — you need to introduce. Lumon's team handles everything: the client conversation, rate negotiation, transfer mechanics and FCA compliance. You make the introduction in one sentence and Lumon does the rest. Commission follows automatically.

How Lumon works for estate agents

Six things Lumon does — for your clients and for your bottom line.

Lumon's partner programme is built around the reality of UK estate agency: your clients move money internationally at key moments in the transaction cycle, and you are the best-placed person to make the introduction. Here is what the platform delivers on both sides.

1

Bank-beating exchange rates, no transfer fees

Lumon targets consistently better exchange rates than high-street banks — no transfer fee on transactions above the threshold, and a dedicated currency specialist for every client. Your buyers and vendors get more of their money to the destination.

2

Forward contracts to lock in budgets at offer

The moment a client's offer is accepted, Lumon can lock in the exchange rate via a forward contract — even if the funds are tied up in a sale. The client knows exactly what their purchase costs in sterling. No nasty surprise at exchange.

3

Free multi-currency accounts in minutes

Clients can open a multi-currency account with Lumon in minutes — no cost, no delay, no complex onboarding. This allows early planning well before a purchase completes, giving clients time to move money when the rate suits them, not when the solicitor demands it.

4

Dedicated account manager for every client

Every client you introduce gets a named Lumon account manager who guides them through local processes and regulations, helps them time the market, and handles every transfer from first instruction to final receipt. Your client is looked after. Your reputation benefits.

5

Lifetime commission on every transfer

Lumon pays agents £50 when a referred client activates their account, then 20% of the profit Lumon makes on every transfer that client ever makes — for the lifetime of the relationship. A client who moves money annually for 10 years generates passive income from a single 90-second introduction.

6

CRM integration with Reapit and REX

Lumon integrates directly with Reapit and REX CRM platforms, making it simple to identify which clients in your pipeline have an international money-transfer need and to track referrals without additional admin. The system flags the opportunity; you make the introduction.

How the partnership works in practice

From signing up to earning commission — five steps, the first of which takes 90 seconds.

Estate agents are live with Lumon from the first conversation. There is no tech integration required to start earning, no jargon, and no pressure on your clients. The whole model is built around your existing workflow.

1

Become a Lumon partner

Sign up online in around 90 seconds. Fill in your contact details and agree the partner terms. Key requirement: confirming your clients' permission when you introduce them. That is it. No technology procurement, no IT involvement.

2

Add one line to your standard documents

Lumon recommends adding a single question to your offer letters and vendor packs: will any party be making international money transfers? One line in an existing document becomes your referral pipeline. Around 15-20 agents make their first referral within the first month.

3

Make the introduction

When a client has an international transfer need, you introduce them to Lumon's team. The currency specialist handles every aspect of the subsequent conversation — rates, timing, compliance, transfer mechanics. You need no currency expertise. Lumon brings it all.

4

Client activates and transfers

The client opens a Lumon account (free, minutes), locks in a rate via spot or forward contract, and transfers their funds. Lumon guides them through local regulations and Notaire requirements in France, Spain or wherever the destination. Your client gets a seamless experience.

5

Commission lands — and keeps coming

Your £50 activation bonus is paid per client. Then 20% of Lumon's profit on every transfer that client makes is yours — indefinitely, even if they never buy or sell through you again. One introduction to a client who moves money regularly compounds into significant passive income over time.

Currency, commission and clients — how Lumon turns your international transactions into a new revenue stream

In 2024, 33,000 Brits bought property abroad, moving over £8.8 billion. The agents in those transactions had a choice: let the client go to their bank, or make a 90-second introduction that pays commission for the lifetime of the relationship. This session shows you how to make that choice count.

Frequently asked questions

What agents ask before they start referring clients to Lumon.

Do I need any currency expertise to refer clients to Lumon?
None at all. You are making an introduction, not giving financial advice. Lumon's currency specialists handle every aspect of the client conversation — rates, timing, transfer mechanics, FCA compliance, and local regulations in the destination country. Your job is to recognise that a client has an international transfer need and mention Lumon by name. A one-liner in your offer letter or vendor pack is sufficient. Lumon provides a one-page reference guide that takes five minutes to read.
How exactly does the commission work and when does it get paid?
You earn £50 when a client you introduce activates their Lumon account. After that, you receive 20% of the profit Lumon makes (before costs) on every transfer that client makes for the lifetime of the relationship — whether or not they ever buy or sell through your agency again. Commissions are paid out on a regular basis and tracked in your partner dashboard. There is no honeymoon period, no cap, and no hidden terms that reduce what you earn over time.
What types of client need Lumon's service?
Clients buying or selling property abroad; vendors who are relocating overseas after a UK sale; clients transferring UK equity to fund an overseas purchase; clients making regular overseas payments such as a foreign mortgage, maintenance costs, or school fees; clients sending money to family members in another country; and clients receiving income or pension payments from abroad. In short, any client whose financial life crosses a currency border is a potential Lumon introduction.
Is Lumon FCA-regulated and safe for clients?
Yes. Lumon is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK and by the Central Bank of Ireland post-Brexit, which means it can service both UK and EU-resident clients. Client funds are held in segregated accounts in line with FCA requirements, and the company has operated for 25 years without incident. Lumon also holds accounts in-country in key markets (including France) for faster, more cost-effective transfers directly to Notaires.
How quickly can my clients get set up and start transferring?
A Lumon account opens in minutes online. From there, a client can open a free multi-currency account, which allows them to plan transfers early and take advantage of favourable rate movements before their transaction completes. For clients who need to lock in a rate immediately, a spot contract can be agreed on the day. A forward contract can be put in place at offer stage to protect the budget through to exchange, even if the client's funds are currently tied up in a UK sale.
What does the Kerfuffle member route actually get me that the standard sign-up doesn't?
The Kerfuffle member route gives you a direct conversation with Steve Eakins, Lumon's Key Partner Director, rather than going through a generic sign-up funnel. Your Kerfuffle account manager is in the loop before you commit to anything, which means you have an independent voice reviewing the commercial terms alongside you. You also get access to introductory materials specifically designed for UK estate agents, and Kerfuffle's collective buying power means the commercial conversation starts from a stronger position. Book via the Calendly link on this page to access that route.
